Away from the crowds and noise in Central Thailand, in the North Eastern region is a laid-back city, Roi et. It hosts the tallest building in this region, Roi et tower. With the constant shift and modification in the architectural field, this tower is built in the shape of a panpipe, making it so distinctive.
A panpipe, wot, is a traditional Isan instrument that is mostly made of bamboo. It is blown to generate a sound. In a majorly told folklore, the wot was used by farmers to send a signal to Phi Fa to stop the rain, so that rice harvesting could begin.

Roi Et Tower is a 35- story building, 101meters tall. To access it you purchase a ticket on arrival at 50bahts, then you are led to the lifts. On its interior walls there are stories on how it came to be, art and decorations to be admired. Even the chandeliers are part of the art. On the different floors, there is a restaurant, souvenir shop, cafè, viewing area (my favorite), sky walk glass and the Buddha hall that has Buddha’s relics on the final floor.

From the observation area on the 32nd floor, one gets a bird’s view of the city. You can see the Great Buddha of Roi Et standing tall across the distance. Just down below is the man-made lake. From up there, watching the city feels a bit like being an intruder — but in the best possible way. They recently opened the zipline but bookings have to be made in advance.

Once done touring the tower and soaking in the beautiful views, you can visit the nearby park, Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Park. You can either ride a boat on the lake, feed fish or just take a walk. It is a nice place to relax and enjoy the quiet.

Why not add Roi Et Province to your Northeastern Thailand travel destination?

(Pro tip: The tower offers a spectacular fireworks display on New Year’s Eve.)
