One afternoon we were walking with my friend when music called. I turned to her and said “sounds like people are having fun nearby. We have to find the place.” As, we got near, I saw the mobile stage truck with some dancers entertaining the crowd. Next to the truck, was a buffalo who apparently had just completed her performance. I was shocked upon realizing that it was a buffalo beauty contest. If you are from Kenya, like I am, we only have buffaloes in the national parks. Also, you know that they are not friendly animals.

In Thailand, they rear water buffaloes on their farms. Due to the hot weather, the farmers have a task of spraying them with water every now and then. There were buffaloes from different farms in various parts of the country.

The buffalo that performed the last. He was exhausted.

We walked around looking at them when we came to this particular one. He had a beautiful shape and color too. With the outstanding specs he had won a number of trophies. I took some selfies with him and the owners asked if I would fancy riding him. Without thinking twice my answer was yes. They helped me up and even though deep down I had some fear, I rhythmically swayed to the music from up there. After having enough, they helped me climb down.

I was so intrigued by the buffalo. I talked with the owner for a few minutes and I got to learn his nickname, New Year. He was only 4 years old. She told me that the contests were held in different provinces as decided by the committee.

New Year, the beautiful buffalo.

Though I am afraid of many animals, regardless of the large horns, my adventurous spirit kicked in and I had lots of fun. Who would have thought I would stand close to a buffalo?
