A trip to Chiang Mai

Late last year, I decided to tour Chiang Mai, a city in the Northern Region of Thailand. I had heard that the region was mountainous and hence having cooler weather. Determined and eager to explore, I only had a backpack. Though, luck was not on my side. Buses were fully booked on that particular day and had to leave on the next.

After a long bus ride, I arrived at dawn. In a café at the bus station, I took coffee as I watched passengers alight from other buses. The light drizzle made my heart feel at home as Kenyan towns in the central region mostly have chilly mornings. After a much needed nap, I stepped out for the afternoon. For lunch I tried the famous Khao Soi which was delicious.

I was there for two weeks which were nothing short of magical. There were many places to explore and experience. The night markets could not be missed. They had so many crafts to buy as souvenirs, food and entertainment. I visited the zoo and it was nice to see animals from all round the world. The African zone could not be missed.

In the old town, majority of the buildings are built of wood though some are being modernized. The most interesting part is the history that many years ago, there was a wall surrounding the town. It protected the residents from war attacks. To get in and out of town, everyone had to use a gate. Though a higher portion of the wall is no more, there is some remaining bits.

Behind me is the gate that used to control movement into the old town.

Finally, I hiked to Doi Suthep which was beyond incredible.

The staircase leads to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

I had an amazing time, many firsts were taken and would take any chance I get to travel back.
