It could be teaching is in my DNA or it is a God-given talent. I realized that I had a thing for educating way back in high school. I was a young coach helping my friends with their assignments. During my campus breaks, I would gladly take any opportunity that came my way to be in the classroom sharing knowledge.
Though I was certain of being an educator, I never imagined myself teaching in primary level. Young adults I was okay with. To some extent, I envisioned myself in a lecture room. You know instructing and giving notes. Hey, a girl can dream. I love kids but being with them in a classroom, I was not confident on how to handle them. Now that I am in it, I realize it is not as frightening as I Imagined.
I am an ESL teacher to primary and kindergarten students. To some, studying a second language is undemanding while to others it is taxing. I use games and pictorials to teach as they are conversation enablers. Gestures too come in handy especially when teaching how to express themselves. To cheer up, we sing and dance. On this YouTube is such a buddy. Let me applaud CoComelon channel for the appealing songs. They are so easy and fun to dance to. Despite the fun, students are able to build on their vocabularies.
Besides being their teacher, I make a good friend. After classes, I listen to them even though my understanding of their native language is on the lower level. We share hugs, high fives and smiling is common. The beauty with children is their simplicity. It takes minimal effort to cheer them up. I have had a lot of learning to do but I am glad I never allowed my fear of teaching children stand in the way.
